Every trucker has a GPS horror story. Most shipping fleets are still using the same app.

Every experienced driver has a version of this story. The navigation app says turn left. The road looks fine from the cab. Then the bridge clearance sign comes into view 12'4" and the truck is 13'6". What follows isn't just a close call. It's a shipping delay, potential cargo damage, a tow, a CSA score hit, and a conversation nobody wants to have with dispatch.

This isn't a rare edge case. The NHTSA reports approximately 15,000 bridge strikes annually, many involving commercial drivers using consumer GPS apps to route freight shipping operations. The root cause is simple: Google Maps routes for passenger cars. It has no data for vehicle height, posted weight limits, bridge clearances, or hazmat designations. Google has explicitly stated that commercial truck routing is "infeasible" and not on its roadmap. Yet drivers keep using it, sometimes because the fleet hasn't provided an alternative, sometimes because the consumer app just feels more familiar. Either way, the gap between the navigation tool in the cab and the shipping operation it's supposed to support is where incidents happen and costs accumulate.

The exposure goes beyond bridge strikes. A reefer routed down a weight-restricted residential street, a box truck sent up a grade it can't safely descend, a driver on a "no commercial vehicles" parkway, each of these triggers a different chain reaction: a tow, a citation, a missed shipping delivery window, detention charges at the receiver. Running a consumer app alongside an ELD also means split attention on every turn, at nine times the baseline crash risk of integrated navigation. The routing mistake and the compliance gap don't just coexist, they compound each other across every driver, every shift.

A strike on a loaded reefer doesn't just cost the roof repair it costs the cargo, the tow, the detention clock, and the CSA score that follows the carrier for the next 24 months of shipping operations. In a freight shipping market where carrier margins averaged 0.4% across the truckload sector in 2025, the app your driver uses to find the next exit is not a minor detail. It's a cost center most shipping fleets haven't quantified yet because the incidents get logged as accidents or late deliveries, not as navigation failures.

The tool exists. The gap is adoption.
