# Immigration agents at weigh stations: what's happening on American freight highways

Something changed at truck weigh stations across the United States this year. What used to be a routine stop for weight and safety inspection has become, in a growing number of states, a point of immigration enforcement and the freight and shipping industry is starting to feel the consequences in ways that go well beyond the weigh station itself.

Federal ICE agents are now working alongside state troopers to check the documentation, work authorization, and English proficiency of commercial drivers, in a coordinated operation between the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Transportation, and state law enforcement agencies. The administration's stated justification is road safety, citing a series of fatal crashes involving improperly licensed drivers. But what's unfolding on the ground is having a direct effect on freight capacity and the mechanism is worth understanding.

In Iowa, court records reveal how the operation works in practice. State troopers pull over trucks that bypass weigh stations without stopping a standard traffic violation and then conduct immigration inquiries. Rather than issuing a ticket and releasing the freight driver, they return the truck to the weigh station where ICE agents are waiting. Indiana has been running a similar operation since last fall under a formal partnership that grants state troopers immigration enforcement powers, resulting in more than 200 arrests in a single operation, 50 of them commercial freight drivers.

Those numbers connect to a figure that's been reshaping the freight driver pool all year: more than 28,000 commercial driver's licenses issued to individuals without legal work authorization have been revoked nationwide. The CDL rule changes that took effect in March 2026 already restricted non-domiciled drivers from obtaining or renewing licenses. What these weigh station operations add is active enforcement on the road, removing freight drivers who may still be operating despite revocations and doing so in some of the busiest shipping corridors in the country. Iowa sits on Interstate 80. Indiana sits at the intersection of major east-west and north-south freight routes. The locations are not incidental.

The capacity impact on freight shipping isn't uniform across the country, it's concentrated in specific corridors and segments where immigrant drivers have historically played a significant role: border states, regional freight distribution, drayage operations near shipping ports. As enforcement expands to more states and more weigh stations, the question for shippers and logistics operators isn't whether this affects the freight driver pool, it already does. It's which shipping lanes are most exposed, and whether current routing strategies account for a capacity picture that keeps narrowing from multiple directions at once.

The weigh station was always a checkpoint. In 2026, it's also become a mirror, reflecting how deeply interconnected immigration policy, driver availability, and freight shipping capacity have become.
